In 2023, Up North Productions were out and about filming non league and grassroots football matches all over the North West of England once again.

In total, there were 138 goals caught on camera! We managed to narrow it down to just FOUR! Now, it is over to you to decide which goal was the best!

This year's Goal of the Year competition is sponsored by The Boot Doctor, and they will provide the winner with a pair of football boots!

Goal of the Year competition - the matches the goals were scored in!

Goal 1

The first goal was scored by Dalton United in their West Lancs Football League Challenge Cup final with Carnforth Rangers. The match was played at Charnock Richard FC, but despite Dalton's goal being nominated for Goal of the Year, they were beaten on the night, 3-1.

Goal 2

The second goal in our Goal of the Year competition was scored in what proved to be the best game that we filmed in 2023! It was an unbelievable match which saw SEVEN first half goals as Garstang took on Darwen FC at the Riverside in the North West Counties First Division North. Darwen took an early lead direct from a corner through Brayden Shaw, but Garstang hit back on 17 minutes thanks to Andrew Murphy freekick which beat the visiting goalkeeper.

Five minutes later and Garstang were ahead when a freekick was floated in and turned home from close range, and the hosts extended their lead on 27 minutes when Zach Clark headed home beautifully from a fantastic cross from the right to make it 3-1.

However, the game was far from over and from the kickoff, Darwen were back in it with a Goal of the Year contender from Shaw again, who struck the ball from distance into the back of the net, giving Will Kitchen in the Garstang goal no chance whatsoever.

The scoring wasn't finished there though as Leon Creech curled a superb right footed shot past the keeper from inside the area to make it 3-3 after just 31 minutes.

Creech then doubled his tally for the day three minutes before halftime when the ball was pumped forward by the keeper and fell kindly to the Darwen number 9, who finished neatly to make it 4-3.

The second half wasn't quite as exciting, but Creech did manage to capitalise on a mix up at the back with 16 minutes remaining to complete his hat-trick and earn Darwen an opening day away win.

Goal 3

Our third Goal of the Year contender came in another non league, again in the North West Counties First Division North, as Nelson took on AFC Blackpool at Little Wembley. The goal was scored by AFC Blackpool, and was the second of the match as the away side raced into a 4-0 first half lead.

They extended their advantage in the second half, before Nelson pulled a goal back from the penalty spot, but it turned out to be nothing more than a consolation as The Mechs ran out 5-1 winners.

Goal 4

The final Goal of the Year contender for 2023 came in yet another North West Counties First Division North clash, and again, it was AFC Blackpool who scored it, this time at Euxton Villa. This wonder-strike only turned out to be a second half consolation as the home side raced into a 3-0 first half lead and ran out 3-1 winners.
