Dear Grassroots Football Manager,

We get it.

​

Managing a junior football team isn’t just about standing on the touchline watching a game.

​

Far from it.

​

You’re making substitutions.

​

Giving instructions.

​

Having to deal with parents who think they know more than you!

​

Sorting out positions.

​

Encouraging the kids.

​

And occasionally wondering why something you spent 20 minutes working on in training has completely disappeared by Sunday morning.

 

Then the final whistle goes.

And now you forget half the things you wanted to talk about post-match.

 

Was your midfielder actually leaving too much space?

 

Was the winger making the run you’d asked for?

 

Did your defender really have another option when they gave the ball away?

 

Was the team dropping too deep...

 

...or did it just feel like they were from where you were standing?

 

You probably noticed some of it.

 

But you definitely didn’t see all of it.

 

Because how could you?

 

You’re trying to manage the game at the same time as watching it.

 

And that creates another problem a few days later.

 

Training.

 

You know what you want to work on.

 

You know there were moments from the match you’d love to go through with the players.

 

But the moment has gone.

 

So instead you’re stood there saying:

 

“Remember that bit in the second half when…”

 

And half the kids are looking at you like you’re talking about a completely different match.

 

Because you can explain something until you’re blue in the face...

…but that doesn’t mean a young player can picture exactly what you mean.

 

Wouldn’t it be easier if you could just show them?

 

Stop the action.

 

Go back a few seconds.

 

Show them where the space was.

 

Show them the player they didn’t see.

 

Show them what happened when they made the right decision.

 

Suddenly you’re not asking them to remember something that happened three days ago.

 

They can see it for themselves.

 

And it’s not only the coaching side.

 

How many brilliant moments from junior football simply disappear once the game finishes?

 

That goal one of the kids talks about for the next month.

 

That ridiculous save.

 

That bit of skill that had everyone on the touchline reacting.

 

A parent might have caught it on their phone.

 

Maybe.

 

Assuming they were filming at exactly the right moment.

 

Assuming the camera was pointing in the right direction.

 

Assuming they weren’t watching their own child instead.

 

And if nobody got it?

 

Gone.

 

There’s no replay.

 

No clip to send to grandparents.

 

Nothing to put on at the presentation night.

 

Nothing for that player to look back on in five or ten years and remember what playing football with their mates was actually like.

 

And yes...

 

You could try filming the match yourselves.

 

Find a parent willing to stand there with a camera.

 

Hope they can follow the ball.

 

Hope they don’t miss anything.

 

Hope they’re still willing to do it next week after spending the whole game concentrating on a screen instead of watching their child play.

 

Or stick a phone somewhere and cross your fingers.

 

But there’s a reason most junior teams still finish a match with nothing useful to look back at.

 

And that means every week, coaches are trying to improve young players using little more than memory and explanation...

 

While some of the best moments those players will have in junior football disappear the second the referee blows the whistle.

 

It doesn’t have to be like that.

 

Because when you can actually go back and see the game again, something changes.

Coaching becomes easier.

 

Instructions become clearer.

 

Players start seeing things they never noticed while they were playing.

 

Parents get to see moments they missed.

 

And suddenly one Sunday morning gives you something useful long after everyone has gone home.

 

That’s where things get interesting...
